Adopting a senior dog can be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. While many people are quick to choose puppies, older dogs are often overlooked, despite having a ton of love to give. Don’t just take our word for it – hear from some of our happy adopters who’ve fallen head over heels for their Golden Paws. These stories show the joy that comes from giving a senior dog a chance at happiness.

Take Minnie, for example. She was around 10 years old when she was rescued, a tiny bundle of nerves. It was clear she’d been mistreated and carried that wariness with her. But after settling in with her canine sisters and human family, she soon learned that people could be trusted. Now 14, she’s a confident, happy dog who loves her walks, enjoys a good play, and is absolutely adored by her family.
Star is a 10-year-old good boy who has made an impressive recovery after a difficult time. In January 2023, after being hit by a car in Romania, he had spinal surgery. Despite the odds, Star learned to walk again and now enjoys a normal life. Adopted by Vivienne a year ago, he’s definitely got his paws under the table and is living the dream as a loving companion.
Dylan, believed to be around 14, may be totally blind, but he’s still 100% handsome. His journey to Gail began in January 2022 after enduring some tough times. Found by a policeman and taken to a shelter, skinny Dylan struggled for a few years until Paws stepped in to rescue him. Despite his difficult past, he settled into Gail’s home as though he’d always been there. He’s the perfect fit, showing just how adaptable and loving dogs can be, no matter what they’ve been through.
Helen, Trevor’s adopter, says: “We adopted Trevor (or to give him his full moniker, ‘Lord Trevor The Wonderdog’) at the age of 7. I wasn’t sure I’d have the energy for a puppy. I was probably right! Trevor’s 13 now and still going strong. Aside from a few more grey hairs, I call it his ‘George Clooney’ look, he’s healthy, happy and everyone’s friend. He adores having a good brush, drinking from dirty puddles, racing around on the beach and a cheeky sausage roll. I couldn’t imagine life without him. He’s my best mate”
Fergus was 8 years old when he finally made it to his forever home (or 5 in Paws years!). His journey wasn’t straightforward – at one point, it looked like he might not make it due to restrictions on dogs being brought over. The moment Louise heard about the changes, she immediately began to map a route to Romania, determined to bring Fergus home. Thankfully, everything worked out and Fergus made it safely. When he first arrived, the haunted, hollow look in his eyes left a deep impression. But over time, Fergus has transformed into a much happier dog, leaving those difficult days behind. Fergus’s journey, like many of our dogs, highlights the power of patience and love in turning a life around.
And then there’s Bruno, the cheerful senior who came from a hard life in Romania. He was 12 when he found his forever home and has just celebrated his 13th birthday – though you’d never guess his age. Bruno doesn’t seem to know he’s a senior; he’s full of life and energy, always ready for his next adventure. His youthful spirit is a joy to be around, proving that age is just a number when it comes to love and enthusiasm.

Adopting a senior dog is a truly heartwarming experience. Many of our older dogs have endured tough conditions, often spending time on the streets after being abandoned. Giving them a home in their later years is a wonderful way to show them the love and care they deserve. No dog should die forgotten and alone on the streets or end their days in one of the notoriously grim public shelters. When you adopt a senior dog, you’re giving them a true lifeline and in return, they offer boundless affection and gratitude, knowing they’ve finally found a place where they truly belong. Alfie, Ava and Gina have found their forever families, but sadly we still have lots of older dogs looking for love. Why not find your perfect match with us today?
