Why do we charge adoption fees?

Most people who apply to adopt dogs from us are responsible owners. We ask everyone to read our adoption criteria carefully before submitting an application. This includes a detailed breakdown of all the costs involved, ensuring complete transparency. Despite this, we sometimes get messages asking if we can hand over a dog for free or complaints that our adoption fees are a bit steep.

So, why don’t we rehome dogs for free? After all, we’ve got so many looking for a loving home. Well, taking care of dogs isn’t cheap. There are vet bills, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping, food and more. Adoption fees help cover these expenses, ensuring the dogs are healthy and ready for their new homes. Also, an adoption fee also shows that potential owners are serious about pet ownership,  making sure only those truly ready for the responsibility step forward.

When people put their money where their mouth is and invest in adopting a dog, they’re more likely to value and care for their new pet. Free dogs might be seen as less valuable, which can lead to neglect. A monetary commitment can also prevent spur-of-the-moment decisions, where people might take home a dog on a whim without thinking about the long-term responsibilities and costs.

Finally, adoption fees ensure that only those who are financially able to provide proper care for a pet apply to adopt. By maintaining an adoption fee, we can ensure the well-being of the dogs and continue to provide top-notch care for animals in need, all while encouraging responsible pet ownership.

So, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for, and in this case, it’s a healthy, happy dog for you and peace of mind knowing they’re going to a good home for us.
